April 2009

CDs are forever. Compact Discs arrived in Australia in 1985. Barely 20 years later and the download revolution began, changing the music industry how we know it. The fact is, CDs still have a big place in our day to day lives. We all have CD collections and we are not about to toss them out just because the mp3 age has arrived. People still love to collect CDs for their permanence, their artwork, liner notes and to own something tangible. A CD is collectable and may increase in value over time as particular titles become hard to find. With downloadable music, you could pay the 1.99 per song but where does that get you? It is of inferior sound quality and you are stuck playing it on your PC or iPod. Everyone knows that mp3 files strip up to 90% of the original data and you end up with an inferior listening product. Imagine if your computer died and all your mp3's were lost. This has already happened to many people. With CDs you can have them forever and your collection makes up part of who you are.
"The songs on an album compliment each other and flow together to create an over all experience, and certainly some artists are better at this than others" - (S.E.Shepherd). With today's technology, you can create your own compilations from your CD library or mix and match with mp3. Pretty soon they'll invent the new better format to replace mp3's which will make your current iPod and mp3 players redundant. You'll have to re-download all your favourite tunes again and buy the iPod Mark II. How many Playstation consoles have come out so far...? The debate between CDs vs MPs will go on forever, but at least its good to know that the humble CD is holding its own and will be around for many years to come.

Warmest regards,
